Point-of-Care Ultrasound for the Hospitalist

April 12, 2024

Morning Course 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Afternoon Course 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Course Overview

Point-of-care ultrasound has become an indispensable bedside tool in the care of acutely ill patients as portable ultrasound machines have become more compact and available in hospitals. As frontline providers, hospitalists are using point-of-care ultrasound to guide diagnostic workups and perform invasive bedside procedures on their patients. This Advanced Learning Course combines high-yield didactic sessions with hands-on training to teach the fundamentals of how to evaluate patients with point-of-care ultrasound. The course starts with a review of the basics of ultrasound technology and then dives into the myriad of diagnostic ultrasound applications: focused cardiac ultrasound; evaluation of pleural effusions, pneumothorax, and ascites; evaluation for lower extremity deep venous thrombosis; and evaluation of abdominal organs. Participants experience low participant-to-faculty ratios in an interactive atmosphere that is highly conducive to learning. Imaging techniques are practiced on live models with experienced faculty teaching participants. This Advanced Learning Course employs cutting-edge equipment and is led by expert faculty gathered from across the country.

The Society of Hospital Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 4.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 4.5 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

Beyond the Bedside: Transforming Hospitalist Careers

April 12, 2024
1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Course Overview

Today’s healthcare environment is rapidly changing, and hospitalists across the country have been called into action to help care delivery transformation. Being experts in providing efficient care, hospitalists are routinely called upon to lead certain aspects of clinical operations like managing length of stay, quality, and readmissions. This often results in being placed in positions of leadership without the knowledge or skill set necessary to be major disruptors in these transformational efforts. Alternatively, hospitalists may be searching for the next opportunity and asking what steps they need to take.

This Advanced Learning Course will provide a toolkit focusing on the early stages in organizational leadership by learning principles of conflict resolution, Lean management, Health Systems Science, and hospital financial fundamentals. This will enable attendees to extend their skills beyond the bedside in ways to create sustainable career growth, enhance job satisfaction, and unlock new pathways of impacting patient care.

Faculty will have leadership experience in different realms to provide information, insight, and advice. There will be plenty of opportunity to interact with course faculty and network with faculty as well as attendees.

The Society of Hospital Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 3.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 3.5 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
